Sleep, See, Protect: Introducing EyeDream MC Ortho-K Lenses

If you were told that your child could simply put in a pair of contact lenses before bed, remove them in the morning, and enjoy perfect 20/20 vision all day without glasses—you might think it sounds like science fiction.

However, this is a daily reality for many of our younger patients at The Eye Centre. This remarkable, non-surgical treatment is called Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) or sometimes referred to as Overnight Vision Correction (OVC).

While Ortho-K provides incredible lifestyle freedom for active children, its true value lies in its medical benefits. Today, we want to spotlight the specific lens we trust for this treatment: the EyeDream MC Ortho-K Lens, manufactured by the UK’s leading specialist contact lens laboratory, No7.

Sleep, See, Protect: Introducing EyeDream MC Ortho-K Lenses

What is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is an advanced form of Preventative Eye Care. It involves wearing a custom-designed, highly breathable rigid contact lens only while you sleep.

While your child rests, the lens gently reshapes the front surface of their eye (the cornea) by less than a hair’s width. When they wake up and remove the lenses, their vision is perfectly clear for the rest of the day. There is no need for daytime spectacles, no broken frames on the playground, and no lost contact lenses in the swimming pool.

The "MC" Difference: Engineered for Myopia Management

Not all Ortho-K lenses are designed the same way. The EyeDream MC (which stands for Myopia Control) is specifically engineered by No7 Contact Lenses to do much more than just correct daytime vision.

As we have discussed in previous articles, true Myopia Management requires us to slow down the physical elongation of the eyeball (the axial length).

The bespoke design of the EyeDream MC lens reshapes the central cornea for clear daytime vision, but crucially, it creates a microscopic ring of altered focus in the peripheral vision. This is known as "myopic defocus." This specific optical signal tells the eye to slow its physical growth, effectively applying the brakes to your child’s worsening short-sightedness.

Our Advanced Clinical Approach

Fitting the EyeDream MC lens requires a high level of clinical expertise and exact precision. Because the lens floats on the tear film and reshapes the eye overnight, the fit must be absolutely flawless.

During an Myopia Management Consultation at our Thornton Heath practice, we use hospital-grade corneal topography to map thousands of data points across the surface of your child's eye, creating a 3D blueprint to custom-order their bespoke No7 lenses.

To ensure the treatment is successfully halting the progression of their myopia, we utilise our advanced Topcon Myah diagnostic instrument to precisely track their eye's axial length every three months.

Furthermore, because myopic eyes are at a higher risk for retinal thinning and damage, our clinical care includes routine Optomap Ultra-Widefield Imaging. This allows us to examine the extreme periphery of the retina in high-definition, checking for signs of retinal tears or detachments long before they become sight-threatening.

As an Independent Prescribing Optometrist, my goal is to ensure your child receives the highest tier of hospital-grade clinical care directly on the high street.

Is EyeDream MC Right For Your Child?

If your child plays sports, swims, or simply dislikes wearing spectacles, EyeDream MC Ortho-K lenses offer unparalleled visual freedom while actively safeguarding their future eye health.

To achieve optimal results, EyeDream MC lenses are specifically recommended for patients within the following clinical prescription ranges:

  • Short-sightedness (Myopia): From -0.75D up to -5.50D

  • Astigmatism: Up to -2.50D

If your child's prescription falls within this window, they are likely an excellent candidate for this life-changing treatment.
